The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a research degree awarded for making a significant contribution to knowledge; in our case to the subjects associated with Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The period of research is three to four years. Our Department is one of the largest electrical and electronic engineering departments in the UK.

All PhD students must hold both a Bachelors and a Master's degree. If you are studying in the UK our requirement is either an integrated masters (MEng) honours degree in electrical engineering or a related subject, passed at 2.1 or 1st, OR a bachelors (BEng) honours degree in electrical engineering or a related subject passed at 2.1 or 1st and a master's degree passed at Merit or higher.

The courses you'll take during a degree in Electrical Engineering vary from one university and programme to another. However, you can expect to take classes in Engineering Mathematics and Modelling, Electronic Principles, Circuit Theory, Applied Electrodynamics, Calculus for Physical Scientists, Technical Writing, Electromagnetism, Introduction to Robotics, etc.

The EECS Department is the largest in the School of Engineering with about 700 graduate students in the doctoral program. Application is for the doctoral program only; there is no terminal master's degree. A Master's of Engineering is available only for qualified EECS undergraduates.
